The pitched roofing team at Hamilton Roofing and Building Ltd not only provide a professional slating and tiling services, but also specialises in numerous other pitched roof coverings, such as Cedar Shingles, Decra and many others.
The slate roofing work Hamilton Roofing and Building undertakes ranges from small scale repairs through to large contracts, and we use a wide range of materials, specifications and skills.
Hamilton Roofing and Building are skilled at slating roofs of all sizes and across the whole range of slates currently on the market.
Hamilton Roofing and Building Ltd specialise in:
OUR PITCHED ROOFING WORK INCLUDES:
- Stripping the existing roof.
- Renew Battons with treated wood.
- Renewing the felt with breathable 'Underslaters Felt'.
- Re-lay tiling and slate, choice of colours and designs available upon request.
Slates are laid on the battens in a 'brick bond' pattern, i.e. with the joints between them aligned with the centre of the slates above and below, and with about 3mm between the sides.
Slate double lap.
This layout gives a double lap covering, (i.e. the top part of each slate is covered by two slates; the centre of the slate of the next row, and the lower part of the slate above that). The slope of the roof, and the steepness of the slope, then the smaller the overlap required.
The lowest row of slates at the fascia board is made up of shorter slates to provide the double lap for the first row of full ones, the lower edges of these short slates and the first row of full slates should be the same.
The top row of slates at the ridge are also made up of half slates to give the next row down a double lap. The top edge of the second row down must be at a level where it will be covered by the ridge tile.
Cutting the slates:
Slate is by nature a layered material which can tend to flake.
Using a pair of slate cutters is obviously the preferred option, (these support both sides of the cut underneath while the cut is made by a blade coming down between the supports).

“Michael arrived on time and was courteous and friendly. He removed the buddleia from the roof and repaired the damage done with some cement and did not charge. He was efficient and pointed out further work that should be done on the roof and gave a quote. This can be done at a later date. I have no hesitation in recommending him for roof work.”
“Very good interaction with the manager Mike, who was prompt in assessing the issue and proposing a solution at a reasonable price. Works done on time and budget by a courteous and tidy team. Happy with the final result, would definitely recommend!”
“Really easy and pleasant to deal with. Went the extra mile whenever needed. Not at all pushy but offered appropriate options and solutions when asked and at very competitive prices. Knowledgeable, trustworthy, problem solvers. All work completed to high standard and in a timely way.”
